Part of a broader turn-of-the-century fascination with coded communication, the “Language of…” postcards, whether of flowers, colours, or sentiments, translated emotion into symbol. Produced in Germany at the height of postcard culture, they offered a way to express affection, longing, or hope within the conventions of polite society.
